DC’s latest series on HBO Max perhaps isn’t quite the clear cut superhero show we’re so used to seeing on the big screen, particularly as it’s set in the same universe as Superman and Supergirl, with Green Lantern Guy Gardner already introduced in these previous instalments.
What sets the series apart from previous outings is the central mystery propelling the series’ protagonists, Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre), as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Think True Detective crossed with Watchmen.
As Hal and John continue to investigate the case, their paths cross with Sheriff Kerry Kane (played by Kelly Macdonald) and the crime framework interlinks with the superhero elements in a refreshing take on the well worn superherp format.
Discussing how the series played into and subverted those expectations, star Kelly Macdonald explained how creators Tom King, Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy specifically avoided letting the comic book elements dominate the story, using elements such as their powers and constructs, suits and the rings sparingly.
“People can get over excited about the comic book aspect of things and it becomes everything”, she explained. “And the interesting thing with Lanterns is it underplays that and it feels very much like a world I’m familiar with, playing a detective and sort of gritty and dark with a lot of humour still.”
“And then suddenly a costume turns up and someone takes off into the sky and you remember what world you’re in.”
The dynamic between the three is certainly an intriguing one, as Macdonald explains how her character “really struggles when the lanterns turn up in her town” and that “it’s her jurisdiction. She’s in charge. And she’s trying to find out what has happened here herself and manage it and at every turn it feels like Hal Jordan in particular is trying to wind her up” as she describes his character as “very disobedient.”
“She’s sort of, I don’t know, the voice of reason. She just, like, her job is to keep everyone grounded.”
